Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.1) (.1) (.1)

: ( 648mt)
Black recaptures the ko.

:
White plays her kikashi in the lower left corner, threatening to capture Black's two stones below.

:
Black must answer from below.

If he played at , instead, White would recapture the ko in the left centre. The ko would have become a fight for the life or death of Black's left-hand group, which Black is unable to win.

:
White's throw-in creates an additional approach-move liberty for her left-hand group. Black will have to capture at , before he can approach White's group in the corner.

:
Black is forced to connect the ko, in order to secure his second eye in the centre.

:
The Main Semeai continues.

Please note that Black is unable to capture at at the upper edge, because this move would push him below the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level.

:
White is forced to answer Black's previous push locally.

Black must not play any reduction.

White will connect at after her decision point.

If she mistakenly did before, Black could play a territory-reducing move in the upper right corner. Black would gain one decisive point in the Capture Variation, and so overall. Losing one point in the Semeai Variation would not hurt.
