8a2 - White Must not Enforce the

Smaller Black Eye From Below

(Referenced by 305; 319)

///:

: ( 986)
White must be careful not to start the construction sequence for generating a smaller eye for Black from below, if Michael Redmond's kikashi in the bamboo joint ( 1045) has not been played beforehand .
As we have seen already ( 1040), it benefits White to not fill-in her second false eye.

:
Black will throw-in at here, to prevent White from connecting there, which would allow a smaller eye only, without additional ko in the centre. As before, Black is far below the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level, so we will shift to on the upper edge. To make the position better comparable, will move to .

Please note that the situation - compared to White starting the reduction sequence from above ( 1042) - looks like as if White had captured the ko in the centre with , instead of occupying an outside liberty of Black's group on the right edge. This has the effect of losing a move.
Black's group is still above the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level, so we added the "usual" beginning of the Nakade Sequence ( / ) on the left edge.

:
The hanezeki's tail is still unconnected, so Black has a valid ko-threat in the nakade.

:
Black must connect the hanezeki's tail, because his group is below the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level now.

Ko: ; ;

:
White continues with occupying liberties, to shorten the ko-fight as well as to save ko-threats. If she re-captured the ko, instead, she would need another ko-threat to win the fight.

:
White needs a ko-threat of her own to prevent Black from playing the winning move at . Reducing Black's eye in the centre from below is simply not correct.
