Variations of Our Solution (IIIb)

Tricking KataGo (Triple-Ko)

VAR (C) (A) (.2) (.2)

(Referenced by 222bs)

: ( 222ao)
White plays the tsuke of Yamada Shinji.

: ( 105 222ew)
White draws back, as in Yamada Shinji's original line of play.

However, as we know now, immediately playing the crosscut of would be better.

: ( A 222ez 104 222fb)
Black's hane at the upper edge is one of the moves that are favoured by KataGo now.

However, descending to , instead, would be one point better overall.

Yamada Shinji's original sequence continued with , but KataGo (2020) does not want to play this move any longer. Please note that Yamada found his improvement over the "classical" atari in an aera, when the endgame at the left side was played "late". Once the lower border of Black's upper left corner was settled, none of KataGo's current findings would be applicable any more.
Additionally, Black had played the guzumi in the upper right in due time before his tsuke in the upper left, which provides Black's large group at the right with an additional liberty. This additional liberty will make a very decisive difference also in the upper left, as Black might not be bound any longer by the immediate danger of pushing himself below the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level.

: (105 222fn)
White connects here, also stopping Black from occupying this point.

Cutting at , instead, would be one point worse overall.

: (B 222fs)
Black has to be patient here. Therefore, he retreats a bit and defends by also connecting with .

Defending the corner by connecting at , instead, would be too greedy, denying some hidden (and surprising) weaknesses of his upper left corner. Black would lose one point overall unnecessarily.

:
The endgame at the left side of the board continues as "usual".

:
This is KataGo's bad-shape move in the left centre.

:
Black has to defend this cutting point - sooner or later - so White did not lose a tempo in the Main Semeai by her previous move.

:
White's atari at the upper edge is sente.

:
It is best for Black to connect.

Black must not play any reduction.

After her decision point, White will play at in the upper left. and will follow.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain in the upper left is five points.
  • White's cumulated gain in the left centre is one point.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower left, so losing two points.

In total, White gained four points.

Black + 1 => White + 3

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain in the upper left is five points.
  • White's cumulated gain in the left centre is one point.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower left, so losing two points.
  • Black captured an additional White stone in the left centre, so gaining two points.

In total, White gained two points.

Black + 4 => Black + 2
