VAR (C) (B)

(Referenced by 139; 298)

: ( 230)
Black blocks directly, and takes a liberty of White's group below, hoping to get some advantage for the ko-fight on the right side.

:
White simply connects her single stone, and Black is in a dilemma now. There is no need for White to play more aggressively, e.g. with a move at .

White's partial group in the top left corner has seven liberties (6 * , ), so there will be no Black ko-threats in this area any more. Black's partial group on the upper edge () is not alive yet, so Black cannot tenuki.

However, there is no move available for Black that could simultaneously change both status in Black's favour.

: (A 342; B 343)
Black brings his -group to life.

It will not help him to either play at , or at , instead.

:
White's group on the left side remains unaffected, so White continues with the "usual" sequence on the right side.

:
As far as the semeai on the right side is concerned, we now have reached a change in the order of moves to the main line of this sub-variation ( 231). White will win the game.
