Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.1) (.5) (.3) (.1)

: ( 648bs)
White threatens to capture Black's pair of stones below.

In this subvariation we will assume that White wants to refute Dany's Sacrifice, i.e. will connect her two stones in the lower left after a Black atari.

:
Black must connect from below, because he does not have any eye in the centre.

:
White plays her second kikashi in the lower left corner, but which loses one Main Semeai Liberty.

:
Black does not have any liberty to spend; therefore he is forced to connect at the lower edge.

His large group in the upper right would not survive a White throw-in at this point.

:
White must play her kikashi in the hanezeki just now.

Otherwise, Black would gain from playing his own atari at in the hanezeki that would be possible now, after having gained one Main Semeai Liberty back.

: (E 648bu; F 648bv)
White pushes from above, destroying Black's potential eye in the left centre.
This makes it necessary for Black to later capture at , after White has connected Black's atari at with .

White should not throw-in with , intending to achieve the same aim. She would lose one point overall, while still losing the Semeai Variation.
White would not really benefit from continuing with the Main Semeai here, just achieving the drawn game in both Main Variations.

:
Black blocks, taking White another Main Semeai Liberty.

:
The Main Semeai continues.

:
White connects after Black's atari, refuting Dany's Sacrifice.

Black plays 2/4 reductions.

With 4/4 reductions, the final scores would be Black + 1 / White + 3.

Black will have to capture at before the end of the game.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated loss in the lower left corner is two points.
  • Black lost one point of territory in the left centre.
  • Black did not capture White's two stones in the lower left, so losing four points.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower left, so losing two points.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the hanezeki.

In total, White gained four points.

Black + 3 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

At White's decision point, Black's large group in the upper right will have nine liberties, eight direct ones (), and one approach-move liberty ().
White on her side will suffer from the final ko in the upper right centre - found by Joachim ( 648ag) - that depends on the existence of two White cutting points in the centre (), and Black's large ko threat at at the top.
Black's large group in the upper right will not survive the semeai, but Black will capture White's wC-stones in the upper left, and win by about 15 points.

Black will win the game by a large margin.
