White continues with the Main Semeai.

:
Black follows the Main Semeai, too.

:
According to the assumption for the superordinate variation, White will connect after Black's atari.

Black plays 2/3 reductions.

In the Capture Variation, White will throw-in at after her decision point, so that Black is forced to also capture at before the end of the game.

In the Semeai Variation, White is unable to do so. She would lose another Main Semeai Liberty, resulting in nine liberties for Black's large group at the right. It would survive the semeai, due to Joachim's Final Ko ( 648ag).

Black could also simplify the matter if he connected at , and played only 1/2 reductions thereafter, e.g. with slC. The final scores would remain unchanged.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black captured one White stone in the left centre, so gaining one point.

White lost one point.

White + 1 => Jigo

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation (arithmetically) ...

  • Black got an additional two points of territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured one White stone less in the left centre, so losing two points.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the lower left corner.

White lost one point.

White + 1 => Jigo
