Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.1) (.2)

: ( 648ab)
Black connects at the lower edge, stopping White from playing her throw-in at this point.
Please note that Black needs only two moves to occupy White's liberties in the lower left corner, compared to four moves after White's throw-in at .

: (131 648fe; 130 648ff; 135 648fm)
White plays the central attachment in the left centre, which is one of her best options here.

She might consider playing at herself, preventing Black's kikashi in the hanezeki, She will not affect the overall result of the game, but lower her score in the alternative Main Variation.
Playing Dany's atekomi , heading for Dany's Ko., or blocking at the top with , instead, will be one point worse overall, and so a grave mistake.

:
White's move does not lose a tempo in the Main Semeai, because it creates an approach-move liberty () for her group at the left.

: (135 648fn)
Black plays his kikashi in the hanezeki before continuing at the top.

He might do without, and let White play at , without affecting the overall result of the game. But White would be able to increase her score in the Semeai Variation.

:
It is best for Black now to capture White's single stone at the upper edge.

:
White creates some points of territory in the centre.

:
Black plays his last kikashi, the atari in the lower left.

:
White connects.

She is better in the Capture Variation than in the Semeai Variation, so she will not choose Dany's Sacrifice, instead.
If she did, she would lose two points in the Capture Variation (this is the core effect of the sacrifice), and an additional point overall (no need to capture White's two stones in the lower left); therefore Black would win both Main Variations by one point.

Black plays 2/2 reductions.

Black will capture at before the end of the game.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed an additional point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • Black did not get an eye in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • White gained two points of territory in the left centre.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed an additional point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • Black did not get an eye in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • White gained two points of territory in the left centre.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, Black lost four points.

Black + 4 => Jigo
