2012 - White's Unforced Atari in the Nakade

(Referenced by 497; 508; 718; 817)

:
We will show here that it is safe for White not to play the classical atari at with her move , but to continue occupying liberties of Black's group in the top right, instead.
Black will not win the ko, that potentially arises after White's atari at . But we think that a move that is completely independent of the rest of the board, as is here, should be considered technically better. This ko is more interesting for Black, if the guzumi has not been played beforehand, as in the professional solution. Some variations can be found above ( 732). Please take notice that - at the time of our investigation - we played the endgame on the left side later.

///:

:

White must occupy one point inside her nakade shape not later than with her move . After , we have reached the same position as in our solution ( 509); but without the endgame on the left side played here, so White's choice to play in the upper right corner created a change in the order of moves only.

///:

:
Black cannot take of advantage of White's tenuki on the left side. Even if he takes the point of inside White's nakade shape, he is forced to filling in at after White's move at . Otherwise, White would give double-atari at , and get two eyes. Again, with , we have reached the course of our solution ( 509).

///:

:
Even if White takes the point inside the nakade, with here, in gote, Black has no real use for his "won" move . As usual, if he plays the large endgame move in the top left corner, ...

:
... he loses a move in the semeai on the right side. At the moment, when Black gives atari on the left with , his large group in the top right has only seven liberties left (). So White captures the hanezeki's tail with , thereafter winning the Punishment Semeai, and the game.
